HS Athlete Leads Troopers On 100MPH Chase Before Crashing Into Vehicle: PA State Police

A 19-year-old high school athlete led state troopers on a chase— at times traveling at speeds up 100 mph— before he crashed into another vehicle on Friday night, according to a release by Pennsylvania state police.

Brett Robert Birch, of Jeanette, was clocked going 91 mph in a 55 zone along Parkway East in Monroeville around 9:20 p.m. on Mar. 18, the Pittsburgh patrol unit stated in the release.

While attempting to stop Birch, he increased his speed up to 100 mph, the release states.

During the police pursuit, he committed numerous traffic violations including failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and running a red light, police allege.

It’s when he ran the red light that he struck another vehicle at William Penn Highway and Graham Boulevard in Wilkinsburg, according to the release.

Birch then fled the scene of the crash but was quickly apprehended nearby, according to the police.

No one was injured in the crash, police say.

Birch was charged with the following according to his court docket:

  • Felony Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Officer
  • Misdemeanor Fail Stop And Give Infor Render Aid
  • Summary Disregard Traffic Lane (Prohibited)
  • Summary Turning Movements And Required Signals
  • Summary Careless Driving
  • Summary Improper Pass
  • Summary Driving at Safe Speed
  • Summary Obedience to Traffic-Control Devices (2 Counts)

He was released on his own recognizance and his preliminary hearing has been scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey L. Herbst on Apr. 4 at 8:30 a.m., court records show.

Birch is a senior wide receiver and defensive back football player in the Gateway School District, according to TribLive.
